***** They’re at it again! Those anti-choice bullies are back, hitting the streets of Ottawa to try and give the false and dangerous perception that Canadians want the adbortion “debate” re-opened, that we want laws that would deny millions of people access to legal and crucial healthcare, and further, to shame and abuse people for making what is likely already one of the hardest decisions of their lives.
TIME TO STAND UP FOR OURSELVES! WORRY ABOUT YOUR OWN UTERUS!
Abortion isn’t birth control we use after we slip up on the weekend and—“whoops! get pregnant! again! darn it!” like they would have you believe. Abortions aren’t violent or unethical. They are not “killing babies” or any of the other emotional rhetoric so often used to try and vilify individuals who are fully capable of deciding what they can and cannot do with their own lives.
Being anti-choice isn’t saving all the lives that they claim, it is a death sentence for pregnant people. If we allow for abortion to be made illegal because of a handful of religious fundamentalist bullies, we won’t be seeing the end of abortion in Canada, just the end of safe, medically supervised abortion in Canada. Making it illegal would seek to criminalize the bodies of women* and people with uteruses. It would drive abortion back underground and cause desperation and death. There will be no rallies to end back room abortions though, because for these “life” champions, out of sight is out of mind.
We’re saying NO THANK YOU to a full stop denial of our rights, and the shameful and disrespectful rhetoric that furthers the idea that we are not capable nor intelligent enough, both emotionally and intellectually, to know what is best for our own lives. If you don’t want an abortion, don’t choose one. If you want to stop abortions, march in the streets for daycare spaces, better access to social assistance, living wages for single mothers, better access to community housing, shelter beds for battered women, sex ed classes in high schools, free birth control and school breakfast programs. If you really want to end abortion, lift women and people with uteruses up; build the community. Don’t scurry around the back and try to slam what you perceive to be the front door of the problem in their faces.
Anti-Choice is Anti-Human. Anti-Choice is Pro-Violence. Anti-Choice is Anti-Us.
We know ourselves. We know what we want. We want a choice. We want the ability to decide for ourselves. If you don’t like the choices we make, then make us a better offer, don’t march in the street, spit at us, and call us murderers all while calling yourself pro-life. Who’s life are you pro? Surely not ours.
